Drive through the pretty harbour town of Saundersfoot to St Brides Hotel. Perched on a cliff, both hotel and spa are designed throughout to give stunning views of the blue flag golden-sand beach and silky blue ocean.
The hotel is family owned and beach-chic tasteful with driftwood sculptures, soft blue and cream interiors and walls adorned with local art. Downstairs the Cliff restaurant, Galley bar and lounge area are all vast with floor-to-ceiling windows, and the 34 rooms are individually designed – it’s all about the sea here at St Brides.
The Spa is through double doors which lead through to the cosy reception, with its shelves of Voya and Caudalie products to try and buy. Head downstairs – there is also a stairlift – past a large mani-pedi studio to the small changing rooms. The one we used was galley-style with two small showers, a swimsuit drier, and one vanity unit on one side with a mirror, stool, Caudalie cleanser and a hairdryer; a sink with mirror on the other. Lockers (plus another changing room) are back up at the reception.
The thermal suite is through a glass door, its tiled central space containing a double seat if you need to take a breather. There are three rooms – a beautifully hot herbal wooden sauna, a steamy salt-inhalation steam room, and a marble seated aroma sauna with changing chromotherapy lighting – each seating around six people. Cool off in the sensation shower with a cold mist shower, warm water (not working on our visit) and a cold water-jet option for the brave: or take a handful of ice from the ice-fountain.
The jewel in Spa crown is of course the infinity edged outdoor Marine Hydrotherapy Pool, dangling over the beach, so it feels like you are floating in the sea itself (albeit warmly). Swim out through the plastic curtains and bubble away on the hydro-beds gazing at the pretty cove and bay, the bobbing boats, the sea drifting lazily in and out. There is also a swan pipe to give aching shoulders a blast (and play havoc with your selfies: be careful of the extra splashing). The pool holds around six people comfortably and its saltwater leaves the skin feeling soft and fresh.
After a dreamy dip, head to the spacious spa lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the pool and bay beyond, bright and airy, in tasteful creams and blues, and arranged over three languorous steps. Recline on one of five wide and comfortable loungers and gaze at the seaside. Sit on modern sofas and play with the Caudalie and Voya products laid out for you. Or head to the top level, make yourself a free hot drink, help yourself to the generously stocked fruit bowl and sit at the tables at the back. A door leads to an outdoor terrace for warmer weather.
We loved the outdoor infinity pool: A dreamy place to drift away - and even celebrity watch if you know your Welsh rugby stars.
The food: Every meal was a delight.
The design: the hotel is comfy-chic (we loved our beach-view bedroom) and the newer part of the spa stylishly modern and bright: all make the absolute most of the views and beautiful pearlescent light. When it gets dark, enjoy the modern artwork instead.
The changing rooms in the spa were a little tired and in need of updating.
Couples: Of all ages, for sea-gazing and hand-holding. The beds are super-comfy and the dual treatment room has coastal views.
Sea lovers: Apart from the obvious (did we mention the view?) Voya skincare is marine based, highly ethical and very sustainable, while Caudalie products also bill themselves as marine friendly. The sea food is fresh and local and treatments delightfully marine themed.
We again awarded St Brides 5 bubbles, hands down, for being the perfect relaxing destination where spa merges beautifully into sea. The infinity pool and spa lounge were the highlights, as well as our thoughtful and effective treatment and the delicious spa food. Our trip delivered a top-quality experience and we’d go back there for some R&R anytime.
